Good Performance Starts with Wellness

Shelley Thomas Performance helps horses and riders move, feel, and perform better through thoughtful assessment, physiotherapy, biomechanics, training, and education. By looking at the complete horse-and-rider picture, Shelley helps build stronger bodies, clearer training plans, and more sustainable performance.

Based at Khaleesi Acres in Eagle, Idaho, with Ride Well education available wherever you are.

  • HORSE TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT , REHAB + SALES

    Develop the whole horse.

Thoughtful training for young horses, horses returning from injury, and horses who simply do not feel quite right.

Shelley combines training experience with a physiotherapy lens to help horses build the physical capacity, confidence, and understanding they need for their job.

Horses are not machines

Performance problems rarely exist in isolation.

Changes in movement, behavior, posture, confidence, strength, and performance are information. A horse who hesitates, struggles with a transition, loses balance, changes their jump, resists an exercise, or simply feels different may be communicating discomfort, weakness, confusion, poor preparation, or difficulty with the task.

The same is true of the rider. Rider strength, balance, mobility, confidence, timing, and movement can all influence how the horse performs. Tack, workload, recovery, training history, and the environment add more pieces to the picture.

That is why my work does not begin by simply asking the horse or rider to try harder.

It begins by looking closely at the horse and rider in front of me, noticing what has changed, asking better questions, and identifying what may be limiting the partnership. Sometimes the answer is rehabilitation. Sometimes it is strength, mobility, better movement, clearer training, a tack adjustment, or simply giving the horse more time to understand and develop the task.

The goal is to understand why something is happening before deciding what to do next.

This philosophy shapes everything I do—from physiotherapy and biomechanics to horse training and the Ride Well Academy. Ride Well teaches riders to develop the same habit: pause, observe, investigate, and build what is missing before simply asking for more.

Observe before you assume. Build wellness before demanding performance.

Because better performance does not come from pushing through every problem. It comes from understanding the information the horse and rider are giving us—and using it to train with more purpose

Stop guessing. Start observing.

Good training starts with paying attention to the horse in front of you.

Observe: Recognize meaningful changes in movement, posture, behavior, confidence, and performance.

1

Plan: Choose priorities based on the horse in front of you—not simply what you think you should be working on next.

2

Adapt: Track the response, review the results, and change the plan when needed.

That’s the thinking behind Ride Well.

Ride Well is coming.

A better way to plan and track your horse’s training.

The Ride Well Training Tracker helps you put this process into practice: assess your starting point, choose meaningful priorities, plan intentional eight-week training blocks, track what changes, and make better decisions about what comes next.I am currently putting the finishing touches on the first printed tracker and building the digital Ride Well course.

Join the Ride Well list for tracker previews, launch updates, education, and first access when pre-orders open.

Clinical eye. Trainer's perspective. Horse-first approach.

I have worked as a physical therapist for more than 25 years and have specialized in equine physiotherapy and horse-and-rider performance for nearly a decade.

I am also a lifelong rider, competitor, trainer, barn manager, and horse developer.

That combination shapes the way I work: I look at movement clinically, but I understand the realities of actually training horses, managing their bodies, developing their confidence, and preparing them for their job.

Testimonials

“It's been instrumental having Shelley join our team. I've struggled over the years finding physio that helped my horses and actually benefited them long-term. After having Shelley join our team, I can see a huge difference in the core strength of my horses and flexibility. Riding is one key part of building flexibility and strength, but having Shelley help develop exercises for each of my horses has been a game changer.”

— Tamie Smith, Next Level Eventing

“Shelley has been an integral part of my team for many years now. Her ability to monitor my horse's movement, performance, and fitness gives me comfort in knowing that we are being proactive in maintaining sound performance horses. Shelley's biomechanics program is also extremely important to both myself and my clients' ability to maintain fitness and strength in the saddle. I refer clients all the time to Shelley for the pure fact that Shelley and her team help me do my job better. Happy healthy horses and riders all around.”

— Erin Storey, Storey Tails, LLC

“I am utterly thrilled, exhausted and amazed after my ride today! Maya is now at a place where I don’t have to spend all my energy and focus on her and her attitude and frame. We can start just having fun. So I decided to focus on me more in the saddle. Amazing!!! I am amazed at how much taller I am in the saddle, how much longer my leg, how much less I need to do to influence Maya and how she responds in kind in her body.”
