Good Performance Starts with Wellness

Shelley Thomas Performance combines thoughtful horse development, movement science, and practical education to help horses and riders become stronger, more capable, and better prepared for the demands of training and performance.

Horses are not machines

Performance problems rarely exist in isolation.

Changes in movement, behavior, posture, confidence, strength, and performance are information. A horse who hesitates, loses balance, struggles with a familiar exercise, or simply feels different may need something other than stronger aids or more repetition.

The rider matters too. Strength, mobility, coordination, confidence, tack, workload, recovery, and training history all influence the partnership.

That is why my work begins by looking closely at the horse and rider in front of me, asking better questions, and identifying what may need to change or develop before simply asking for more.

Observe before you assume. Build wellness before demanding performance.

This philosophy shapes everything I do—from horse development and physiotherapy to Ride Well education.

Ride Well academy

Learn to see more. Train with purpose.

Ride Well Academy is where I teach the methods and tools I use to assess horses, build training plans, monitor change, and decide what comes next.

The first product is the Ride Well Training Tracker—a practical tool for assessing your starting point, choosing meaningful priorities, planning intentional eight-week training blocks, tracking what changes, and reviewing your results.

I am currently putting the first printed tracker to work with my own horses while building the Ride Well Foundations digital course.

Get tracker previews, free Ride Well education, launch updates, and first access when pre-orders open.

Develop the horse, not just the task.

I love working with horses who need thoughtful development over time—young horses, horses returning from injury, and horses who simply are not progressing as expected.

My physiotherapy background shapes the way I train. I look at strength, mobility, coordination, confidence, behavior, workload, recovery, and the demands of the horse’s job.

The goal is not simply to teach the horse what to do.

It is to build a horse who is physically and mentally prepared to do it.

Clinical eye. Trainer's perspective. Horse-first approach.

I have worked as a physical therapist for more than 25 years and have specialized in equine physiotherapy and horse-and-rider performance for nearly a decade.

I am also a lifelong rider, competitor, trainer, barn manager, and horse developer.

My physiotherapy background shapes the way I see movement, but it does not limit my work to treatment. I use that understanding every day in training, rehabilitation, conditioning, rider education, and the Ride Well Method.

Testimonials

“It's been instrumental having Shelley join our team. I've struggled over the years finding physio that helped my horses and actually benefited them long-term. After having Shelley join our team, I can see a huge difference in the core strength of my horses and flexibility. Riding is one key part of building flexibility and strength, but having Shelley help develop exercises for each of my horses has been a game changer.”

— Tamie Smith, Next Level Eventing

“Shelley has been an integral part of my team for many years now. Her ability to monitor my horse's movement, performance, and fitness gives me comfort in knowing that we are being proactive in maintaining sound performance horses. Shelley's biomechanics program is also extremely important to both myself and my clients' ability to maintain fitness and strength in the saddle. I refer clients all the time to Shelley for the pure fact that Shelley and her team help me do my job better. Happy healthy horses and riders all around.”

— Erin Storey, Storey Tails, LLC

“I am utterly thrilled, exhausted and amazed after my ride today! Maya is now at a place where I don’t have to spend all my energy and focus on her and her attitude and frame. We can start just having fun. So I decided to focus on me more in the saddle. Amazing!!! I am amazed at how much taller I am in the saddle, how much longer my leg, how much less I need to do to influence Maya and how she responds in kind in her body.”
